Correlation of her 2/neu gene amplification with immunohistochemistry and other prognostic factors in breast carcinoma

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine relationship between HER-2/neu status and estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, grade and age by comparing fluorescence in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry. One hundred invasive breast carcinomas were reviewed and fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis was performed in all cases. Immunohistochemical scores showed a perfect concordance with fluorescence in situ hybridization amplification ratios (p<0.0001). The results indicated a significant correl… Show more

“…However, our patients had slightly lower HR-positive rate than in Europe (74% vs 84%) and slightly higher HER2 receptor-positive rate than in United States (21% vs 15%) compared with Western patients. 18 , 28 , 36 39 The distribution of molecular subtypes and proportion of triple negative breast cancer were similar to that of other countries. 7 , 40 The major molecular subtype was Luminal B (51.5%), the proportion of which kept increasing during the 20 years.…”

“…In terms of the involved anatomic region as well as the histopathological results, this study was in line with other similar studies (Karyannopoulo et al, 2005;Andrade et al, 2010). Any change in the effect of the HER-2/neu gene in HBC is related to tumor grading since, by activating epidermal growth factor receptor 2, both tumor cell proliferation pathways and the cellular growth cycle are activated (Ramadan et al, 2011). The result of activating the cellular growth cycle is the emergence of several mitotic figures in tumor cells, and several anisocytoses and anisokaryoses are observed.…”

“…In the last decades it has been observed an increasing incidence of breast cancer with growing mortality rates [14]. Today immunohistochemistry (IHC) is the most used method to evaluate prognostic and therapeutic response including Her-2 status due to its relatively low cost [15].…”
