Correlation of Deoxynivalenol Accumulation in Fusarium-Infected Winter and Spring Wheat Cultivars with Secondary Metabolites at Different Growth Stages

Abstract: Fusarium infection in wheat causes Fusarium head blight, resulting in yield losses and contamination of grains with trichothecenes. Some plant secondary metabolites inhibit accumulation of trichothecenes. Eighteen Fusarium infected wheat cultivars were harvested at five time points and analyzed for the trichothecene deoxynivalenol (DON) and 38 wheat secondary metabolites (benzoxazinoids, phenolic acids, carotenoids, and flavonoids). Multivariate analysis showed that harvest time strongly impacted the content o… Show more

“…Grains from the selected spikes were used for analysis of mycotoxins and HvNEP-1 expression. Mycotoxin accumulation (DON, NIV, ZEA, T-2, and HT-2) in the seeds of the transgenic lines and control GP plants was quantified in an LC-MS/MS system consisting of an Agilent 1260 infinity chromatographic system (Santa Clara, CA, USA) coupled to an AB Sciex 3200 triple-quadrupole trap mass spectrometer (QTRAP/MS) (AB Sciex, Framingham, USA) according to Etzerodt et al [46]. Analyst 1.6.3 software (AB Sciex, Framingham, USA) was used to control the LC-MS/MS system.…”

“…In previous studies, it has been found that these strains are common in Denmark [ 76 ]. Spore suspensions of both strains were prepared and sprayed according to Etzerodt et al [ 77 ]. Briefly, spikes were sprayed directly with a Fusarium spp.…”

“…A visual linear scale from 0 to 10 was used to assess the infected plants within each plot. The fusariotoxin accumulations (DON, NIV, and ZEN) in the seeds of inoculated hybrids were quantified in an LC-MS/MS system consisting of an Agilent 1260 infinity chromatographic system (Santa Clara, CA, USA) coupled to an AB Sciex 3200 triple quadrupole trap mass spectrometer (QTRAP/MS) (AB Sciex, Framingham, MA, USA), as described by Etzerodt et al [ 77 ]. Analyst 1.6.3 software (AB Sciex, Woodlands Central Indus.…”

“…In a research using wheat, principal component analyses demonstrated a correlation between the susceptibility to FHB and the concentrations of range of Bxs [57]. The benzoxazinoid 2-β-glucopyranoside-2,4-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3one (DIMBOA-glc), α-tocopherol and the flavonoids homo-orientin and orientin were identified as potential inhibitors of (deoxynivalenol) DON accumulation in a study with wheat that correlates accumulation in Fusarium-infected winter and spring wheat cultivars [58].…”
