Correlation between visual acuity changes and optical coherence tomography morphological findings in idiopathic epiretinal membranes

Abstract: In patients with idiopathic ERMs, the presence of CME and IS/OS disruption detected by OCT correlated with a poorer initial BCVA. Most patients' visual acuity remained stable during follow-up. The presence of CME with OCT represented a predictor of the progression of visual acuity. These results may provide valuable clinical information regarding the management of patients with idiopathic ERMs. We demonstrated that the presence of CME and IS/OS disruption detected with OCT correlated with a poorer BCVA in idio… Show more

“…Among morphological changes of the retina in idiopathic ERM patients observed in OCT, outer retinal integrity seems to be related to potential visual acuity. This is consistent with previous studies showing that ellipsoid zone or interdigitation zone is related to BCVA [ 7 8 9 10 11 12 ]. UCVA was not associated with outer retinal integrity, but was significantly correlated with CMT and inner retinal irregularity index.…”

“…In contrast, patients with retinal abnormalities typically showed more decreased UCVA even with mild refractive error. In most clinical studies, visual function has been measured by BCVA after correcting refractive errors, and BCVA showed good correlation with retinal status [ 7 8 9 10 11 12 ]. Few studies have focused on UCVA, and there is little study on the relationship between UCVA and retinal state.…”

“…Previous studies showed that ERM eyes with ME at baseline had worse presenting visual acuity and worse postoperative visual acuity than eyes without preoperative ME. 2,11,[15][16][17][18] We found that MME preoperatively was associated with a worse visual prognosis after ERM removal. We hypothesize that inner retinal cystic changes are an indirect sign of visual pathway impairment, which persists after the release of the macular traction.…”

“…Epiretinal membrane (ERM) is a common macular disease that may induce various degrees of blurred vision and metamorphopsia [1][2][3][4]. At an early stage, ERM is characterized by an abnormal retinal light reflex on fundoscopy with mild retinal thickening and no distortion of the retinal surface [5,6].…”
