The pollution status of ten potentially toxic elements (PTEs), isotopic compositions (Cu, Zn, Pb), and the potential ecological risk posed by them were investigated in the PM10 fraction of road dust in Busan Metropolitan city, South Korea. Enrichment factors revealed extremely to strongly polluted levels of Sb, Cd, Zn, Pb, and Cu in the PM10 fraction of road dust, with Sb levels being the highest. Statistical analyses showed that the major cause for contamination with PTEs was non-exhaust traffic emissions such as tire and brake wear. Cu and Zn isotopic compositions of road dust were related to traffic-related emission sources such as brake and tires. Pb isotopic compositions were close to that of road paint, indicating that Pb was a different source from Cu and Zn in this study. No significant health risk was posed by the PTEs. Taking into account the total length of road in Busan, a high quantity of PTEs in road dust (PM10) can have serious deleterious effects on the atmospheric environment and ecosystems. The results of metal concentrations and isotopic compositions in road dust will help identify and manage atmospheric fine particle and coastal metal contamination derived from fine road dust.

Road dust (RDS) often contains elevated concentrations of pollutants, especially metals. Numerous studies were performed in the last two decades investigating the concentrations of metals like Cu, Pb, and Zn in RDS. In a literature search 177 studies were found where RDS bulk samples were analyzed. In another 49 studies the RDS samples were split into a number of size fractions to consider also the size dependence of the metal concentrations. In RDS bulk sample studies, the upper size limit (USL) of the RDS samples ranged from 2 mm to more than 2000 mm. This is partly a result of the different aims of the studies. However, the concentrations of metals in RDS particles are quite size-dependent. Consequently, comparing of results from different studies makes little sense. Based on the available literature, a standardized sample preparation sequence is proposed in this work. To serve the various aims of RDS studies the separation of the samples into four size fractions is suggested: <10 mm, 10-63 mm, 63-250 mm, and 250-2000 mm. The determination of the mass fractions of the size fractions parallel to the chemical analysis then allows calculation of the concentrations for RDS bulk samples with the four different USLs.

El estudio de carga de la enfermedad por factores ambientales que desarrolló la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) en el año 2016 estimó que incidentes como accidentes cerebrovasculares, enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica, asma en niños, cáncer de pulmón, enfermedad isquémica del corazón y enfermedades respiratorias de vías aéreas inferiores pueden ser atribuidos a la contaminación del aire (1). Esta carga depende de factores como la intensidad, la frecuencia y el tiempo de exposición a la contaminación.Estudios han indicado que la contaminación del aire, per se, no es un factor causal directo de los eventos antes descritos, pero sí es un factor asociado que, en combinación con otros determinantes como la desnutrición, las enfermedades de base o comorbilidades, la contaminación intradomiciliaria por tabaquismo pasivo, la falta de vacunación, las condiciones higiénicas deficientes o nulas y los factores ambientales como el clima, puede desencadenar su presencia.La problemática de contaminación del aire en Bogotá D.C. se debe, en su mayoría, a la presencia de material particulado, el cual es originado a partir de procesos de combustión y resuspensión provenientes de fuentes móviles y del mal estado de las vías (2). A esto se suma el transporte de partículas generadas por incendios forestales de impacto regional, que a su vez ocasionan episodios críticos de contaminación del aire como los que se vienen presentando en los últimos años y tienen impacto en la salud pública (Figura 1). Cabe anotar que este contaminante es el de principal estudio dada su capacidad de transporte de agentes de riesgo como virus, bacterias y algunos metales; además, tiene la habilidad de ingresar con mayor facilidad al cuerpo humano.
