Correlation between the Serum Pepsinogen I Level and the Symptom Degree in Proton Pump Inhibitor-Users Administered with a Probiotic

Abstract: In patients with functional upper gastrointestinal disorders such as gastroesophageal reflux disease and functional dyspepsia, the presence of symptoms is thought to occur in the absence of any organic diseases and the mechanisms behind this remain unclear. We therefore examined the relationship between stomach-related biomarker levels and symptoms. Twenty-four outpatients who had taken proton-pump inhibitors every day were enrolled in this study. The subjects consumed yogurt containing 109 colony-forming unit… Show more

“…As shown in Table 3, of the 14 comparisons, 3-Gomi et al (2015) study A and Waller et al (2011) studies A and B reported significantly reduced (acid) regurgitation, and three comparisons [30][31][32] did not report any improvement. With regards to reflux or heartburn, two comparisons noted a significant improvement [22,27]. Trends for improvement were observed by [31] with the modified GSRS and by [21] with the original GSRS, but not with the FSSG questionnaire.…”

“…The emergence of pathological gastroesophageal reflux is largely dependent on the disturbed motility of the stomach and duodenum [13,14], while the infection and eradication of Helicobacter Pylory do not play an important role in the genesis of GERD, which is also noted in the 4 Maastricht consensus. In addition, the discoordination of the motor-evacuator function of the upper parts of the gastrointestinal tract, in particular the stomach, is the basis for the appearance of mixed (duodenal refluxes), due to the imbalance in the contractile activity of the antral and pyloric divisions and the duodenum [15,16].…”
