Correlation between the In Vitro antioxidant activity and polyphenol content of aqueous extracts from bulgarian herbs

Abstract: The water phase antioxidant activity of extracts from 23 Bulgarian medicinal plants was studied in relation to their polyphenol content in comparison with mate, black tea, honeybush and rooibos foreign species. Antioxidant activity was measured by the ABTS (2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)) cation radical decolorization assay, and the total polyphenol content was assayed according to the Folin-Ciocalteu method. Five Bulgarian plant extracts exhibited higher antioxidant activity than that o… Show more

“…Zheng and Wang (2001) reported excellent correlation for medicinal plants and culinary herbs when antioxidant activity (determined using the oxygen radical absorbance assay, ORAC assay) was compared with the polyphenols content. A linear correlation between antioxidant activity and the content of polyphenols have been reported by Katalinic et al (2006), Kiselova et al (2006), Kratchanova et al (2010), Maizura et al (2011) and Vasco et al (2008). Other authors found no such correlation (Souri et al, 2008).…”

“…Several reports indicate that the antioxidant potential of medicinal plants may be related to the concentration of the polyphenolic compounds (Anantharaman et al, 2010;Kiselova et al, 2006;Wong et al, 2006). The objectives of the study were to determine the total polyphenol content and in vitro antioxidant activities of aqueous extracts of ten selected Sri Lankan medicinal plants, in order to determine the relationship between their polyphenol content and antioxidant activities of plant extracts, and to examine the phytochemicals present in the plant extracts.…”

“…Since the method was not validated to L3'S due to the unavailability of standard, this analyte was quantified expressing the results in equivalents of L7G. In fact, this is an approach often employed by other authors [38,39].…”
