Correlation between <I>I</I>D&frasl;<I>I</I>G Ratio from Visible Raman Spectra and sp2/sp3 Ratio from XPS Spectra of Annealed Hydrogenated DLC Film

Abstract: The hydrogened diamond like carbon film (DLCH) with 1 mm thickness is made by hydrocarbon gas ion beam deposition method. The relationship between I D =I G ratio fitted from visible Raman spectra and sp 2 /sp 3 ratio done from XPS spectra of DLCH film shows a trend. The I D =I G ratio of deconvoluted visible Raman spectra shows a correlation with sp 2 /sp 3 ratio from XPS spectra as annealing temperature increases, the graphitization and the disorder increase. The I D =I G ratios fitted with two-curve Gaussian… Show more

“…In addition to the carbon (C) peak, the oxygen (O) peak contributes by C=O bond is also apparent. The spectra were fitted with three Gaussian curves on a Shirley background [26] with the binding energies centred at around 285.0eV, 287.0eV and 289.0eV, corresponding to sp 2 -C, sp 3 -C and C=O, respectively [27]. The peaks observed for sample deposited at D E of 6 cm, 4 cm, 2 cm and 1 cm are almost similar at ~284.8eV while their full width at half maximum (FWHM) are 4.1, 4.5, 4.6 and 4.8eV, respectively.…”

“…This diagram shows the fraction of carbon sites that have sp 2 (graphite-like) bonding, sp 3 (diamond-like) bonding or bonding with hydrogen. Quantitative analysis of sp 2 and sp 3 bonding in a DLC can be performed by XPS analysis [25,26]. In the present study, the DLC-1 had a higher sp 2 /sp 3 ratio (0.343) at the external surface region (ca.…”

“…9 [18]. It can be seen that dry milling leads to increased sp 2 content, whereas introducing water or methanol to the process reduces this effect.…”
