Correlation between dermoscopic and histopathological diagnoses of atypical nevi in a dermatology outpatient clinic of the Medical School of São José do Rio Preto, SP, Brazil

Abstract: BACKGROUNDThe incidence of cutaneous melanoma is increasing worldwide. Since it is an aggressive neoplasm, it is difficult to treat in advanced stages; early diagnosis is important to heal the patient. Melanocytic nevi are benign pigmented skin lesions while atypical nevi are associated with the risk of developing melanoma because they have a different histological pattern than common nevi. Thus, the clinical diagnosis of pigmented lesions is of great importance to differentiate benign, atypical and malignant … Show more

“…In the ileum, the bacterial population is represented by 10 7 to 10 8 CFU/mL, consisting of facultative anaerobes, Enterobacteria, and obligate anaerobes, such as Veilonella, Enterococcus, Clostridium, Bacteroides , and Lactobacillus . On the other hand, in the large intestine, the population reaches the 10 10 and 10 11 CFU/mL and the most frequently found genera are Bacteroides, Bifidobacterium, Escherichia coli, Bacillus, Clostridium, Eubacterium, Fusobacterium, Peptostreptococcus, and Ruminococcus 56 - 58 .…”

“…The greater the positivity of these signs, the greater the probability of the lesion being a malignant melanoma. However, the definitive diagnosis is made through histopathological examination, which can identify the superficial disseminated, nodular, acral lentiginous, or lentigo maligna patterns 10 , 11 .…”

Впровадження у клінічну практику дерматоскопії підвищило точність неінвазивної діагностики меланоми шкіри на 35 % (Antonio et al, 2013), а атипових меланоцитарних невусів -на 17 % (Carli et al, 2000).…”

“…According to a recent review be Schleusener et al [152], Raman spectroscopy achieved similar results as trained dermatologists using dermoscopy. It should be kept in mind however that dermoscopy has a good sensitivity but a low specificity, e.g., sensitivity of 93% and specificity of 42% [153]. Therefore, improvement of Raman specificity for skin cancer diagnosis is in the focus of current research.…”
