Correlation between crystal structures and polar (ferroelectric) properties of hybrids of haloantimonates(iii) and halobismuthates(iii)

Abstract: Halogenoantimonates(iii) and halogenobismuthates(iii) are a highly versatile class of organic–inorganic hybrid materials, applicable in optoelectronics and switchable dielectric devices.

“…Typical systems include A 2 MX 4 (M = divalent Mn, Fe, Co, Cu or Zn), AMX 3 (M = divalent Cd or Hg), and A m M n X 3n+m (M is = trivalent Sb or Bi). 3,47 The recent quick development of metal-halide hybrid perovskites (MHHPs) with 0D to 3D structures, represented by the prototype compound MAPbI 3 , has boosted the exploration of new ferroelectric MHHPs towards new functions, especially photovoltaic, luminescence and optoelectronic properties. 48,49 Due to the promising properties of MHHPs, they have become a suitable platform to develop multifunctional semiconducting ferroelectrics.…”

“…107 This indicates that many ferroelectrics are candidates for ferroelectric-ferroelastic multiferroics, especially in the families of organic salts and hybrid halides. 47,76,77 One example is the hybrid ferroelectric [C 6 H 5 -N(CH 3 ) 3 ]CdCl 3 showing ferroelectric-ferroelastic coupling. 77 The ferroelectricity originates from the inorganic bond (Cd-Cl) switching but not organic cation reorientation so that a unique polarization switching occurs to trigger a macroscopic tilting of the crystal angle, accounting for a colossal shear strain of up to 22%.…”

“…Among these two groups of ions, halogenoantimonates(III) and halogenobismuthates(III) of the general formula of R a M b X 3b+a (Ran organic monocation, M ¼ Sb 3+ or Bi 3+ and X ¼ Cl À , Br À , I À ) represent an extremely active area of research due to the identication of an impressively high number of compounds exhibiting ferroelectric properties. 20,21 The tendency of the primary building block-MX 6…”
