Correlates of Health Care Seeking Activities in Patients with Urological Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndromes: Findings from the MAPP Cohort

Abstract: Purpose We examined health-care seeking activities over a 12-month period in a cohort of men and women with urological chronic pelvic pain syndromes (UCPPS). Materials and Methods A total of 191 men and 233 women with UCPPS were followed with biweekly internet-based questionnaires about their symptoms and health-care seeking (HCS) activities, including a) healthcare provider contacts; b) office visits; c) emergency room/urgent care visits; d) medication changes; and e) medical procedures. Multivariable model… Show more

“…47 Third, patients with CPPS were likely to use other healthcare services in order to find pain relief. 48 Future trials should strive for a shorter time period between first contact with the patient and trial inclusion. Nevertheless, although the Open access recruitment process faced these challenges, the intended sample size could be reached underlining the feasibility of the study.…”

“…Although chronic pain is often described for the overall prevalence in the population and with mean values for healthcare expenditures and loss productivity, it is well understood that in most chronic pain conditions a smaller subset of patients with lower quality of life disproportionately drive healthcare utilization. 8 Independent analyses suggest that healthcare utilization and healthcare spending on interstitial cystitis is roughly twice that of community controls and the discrepancy seems heavily concentrated in outpatient services. 3,36 Estimates for healthcare utilization in chronic prostatitis are similar.…”

“…(60,61) Taken together, these estimates suggest about 15-20% of adult U.S. women suffer from MPP. It is the primary reason for seeking care in approximately 10% of all gynecologic and urologic visits, (62,63) which does not account for additional presentations to primary care, gastroenterology, and pain management specialists. Given the scale of this public health issue, the potential utility of the algorithm in identifying MPP, particularly without the need for evaluation by a subspecialist skilled in discriminate pelvic exam, could provide better recognition of the condition with earlier assignment to effective care.…”
