Correlates of Depressive Symptoms among Workers in Small‐ and Medium‐scale Manufacturing Enterprises in Japan

Abstract: Although the relationship between job stress and depressive symptoms has been well documented among workers in large scale enterprises, the situation in small-and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) is not fully understood. Objectives: To clarify the factors associated with depressive symptoms in SMEs in Japan. Methods: 1,516 male and 738 female Japanese workers at SMEs were surveyed using a self-administered questionnaire. We applied hierarchical multiple linear regression with depressive symptoms (Center for Epi… Show more

“…In these analyses, the JCQ scores of work demands, job control, and workplace social support were ranked and divided into tertiles (low, medium, and high). Logistic regression analysis was then applied to investigate the independent effect of each dimension of Karasek's job strain model on depression: gender, age, marital status, smoking, alcohol use, exercise, work hours, days on duty, area of work, and specialty were controlled in the analysis because these variables were known or postulated to predict depression outcomes 8,[28][29][30][31] . Actually, we also performed analyses with or without controlling for life style behavior variables or work characteristic variables other than the items of C-JCQ; the results showed that the beta coefficients of independent variables in the reduced models and the full model did not differ noticeably (data not shown); thus, only the results of the full model were presented.…”

“…operation, outpatient clinic or inpatient care). There was certain empirical study reported that working hours were significantly associated with mental health, but the relationship was still equivocal 8,28) . Concerning duty days, a greater number of days on duty may often represent a heavier workload and a greater number of shifts worked per month.…”

“…Some studies report a lower level of psychological distress in workers satisfied with the rewards obtained within their workplace (de Jonge et al 2000, Demerouti et al 2000, Tepper 2000. Conversely, several studies support the hypothesis that job insecurity and possibly the mode and the level of remuneration could in themselves be conductive to psychological distress (Bourbonnais et al 1998, Ibrahim, Smith, and Muntaner 2009, Ikeda et al 2009, Marchand, Demers, and Durand 2005a, 2006, McDonough 2000, Rugulies et al 2006.…”
