Correlates of Alaska Native Fatal and Nonfatal Suicidal Behaviors 1990–2001

Abstract: Factors correlated with suicidal behavior in a predominately Alaska Native region of Alaska are described, and the correlates relating to fatal and nonfatal suicide behaviors in this indigenous population are distinguished. Suicide data from the region (1990-2001) were aggregated and compared to 2000 U.S. Census Data using chi-squared tests. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify predictors of suicide behaviors. Suicidal behaviors were significantly more common among single, unemployed Alaska N… Show more

“…Poverty has been related to completed suicide in Canadian Aboriginals (Bagley, 1991) and in American Indians (Young, 1990). Furthermore, the highest percentage of individuals engaging in suicidal behaviour tended to be unemployed in a sample of mostly Native peoples in Alaska (Wexler, Hill, Bertone-Johnson, & Fenaughty, 2008 (Yoder, Whitbeck, Hoyt, & LaFromboise, 2006), to the employment status of the "main wage earner" in native Hawaiian youth (Yuen, Nahulu, Hishinuma, & Miyamoto, 2000), or to parental employment status in indigenous youth in Alberta (Gartrell et al, 1993).…”

“…This historical (and ongoing) trauma poses a real threat to indigenous health, and has been associated with the exceptionally high local youth suicide rates (Wexler, 2006;Wexler, Hill, Bertone-Johnson, & Fenaughty, 2008;Wexler, Silviera, & Bertone-Johnson, 2012). This paper describes how culture is conceptualized by members of different age groups, and how these understandings shape their stories about overcoming hardship.…”

“…This appears to be due, in part or in whole, to stigmatization of suicidal behavior and cultural prescriptions surrounding the reporting of suicide as a cause of death (Perkins et al, 2009;Wexler, 2008). Social and cultural norms against discussing suicide, and the stigma surrounding suicide victims, may burden individuals, families, and communities by not allowing them to seek and obtain needed support to adequately address their personal grief.…”
