Correcting the extended-source calibration for the Herschel-SPIRE Fourier-transform spectrometer

Abstract: We describe an update to the Herschel-SPIRE Fourier-Transform Spectrometer (FTS) calibration for extended sources, which incorporates a correction for the frequency-dependent far-field feedhorn efficiency, η ff . This significant correction affects all FTS extended-source calibrated spectra in sparse or mapping mode, regardless of the spectral resolution. Line fluxes and continuum levels are underestimated by factors of 1.3-2 in the Spectrometer LongWavelength band (SLW, 447-1018 GHz; 671-294 µm) and 1.4-1.5 i… Show more

“…The SPIRE-FTS data were downloaded from the Herschel Science Archive, processed using HIPE v14.1, with SPIRE calibration files spire_cal_14_3. The FTS extended source calibration (Swinyard et al 2014) was used, and in HIPE v14.1, this includes the updates described in Valtchanov et al (2018) to align the absolute brightness level to match the SPIRE photometer.…”

“…The archival data have been reprocessed through HIPE 15.0.1 using the latest available SPIRE calibration (version 14.3) and the flux calibration for extended emission. It is important to notice that this version of the SPIRE calibration corrects for an important error in extended source flux calibration discovered by Valtchanov et al (2018). This error was corrected with version 14.2 of the SPIRE calibration in Nov 2015 and used in the developer version of HIPE 14 1 .…”
