Coronavirus Disease-19 (COVID-19) associated with severe acute pancreatitis: Case report on three family members

Abstract: Background/Objectives: Abdominal pain is one of the known symptoms associated with coronavirus disease 2019. Little is known about the development of acute pancreatitis as a complication of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection. This case report describes the presentation of acute pancreatitis in two of three family members with severe COVID-19 infection. Methods: Data were collected from three family members admitted with COVID-19 to the intensive care unit in March 2020. This study was re… Show more

“…3 An increasing number of publications have reported that SARS-CoV-2 targets the pancreas resulting in elevation of serum lipase activity or rarely even frank pancreatitis. [4][5][6][7] Autopsy data suggest that the incidence of focal pancreatitis in COVID-19 may be higher than diagnosed clinically. 8 However, it is conceivable that the virus targets not only the pancreas, but also adipocytes causing increased lipolysis through the adipose triglyceride lipase (Figure 1, A).…”

“…Even through pancreas had been reported to be one of the potential target organs of SARS-CoV-2, few clinical cases about SARS-CoV-2-induced pancreas injury had been reported and the underlying mechanism was still unclear [3,4]. This study described incidence of acute pancreatitis in a patient with COVID-19 to grabs attention of physicians on SARS-CoV-2-associated pancreas injury in COVID-19 patients with complex comorbidities.…”

“…Gastroenterology involvement might manifest as asymptomatic bellyache, nausea, emesia, diarrhea and liver enzymes elevation [1,2]. SARS-CoV-2 -associated acute pancreatitis has been reported, however, clearance of SARS-CoV-2 and the pancreatitis was not clear [3]. We present a case of SARS-COV-2 infection in a diabetes mellitus patient causing acute pancreatitis at late disease presentation.…”

“…This nding was supported only by the elevation of serum amylase and lipase. In addition, con rmed cases of acute pancreatitis in COVID-19 patients have been anecdotally reported in two of three family members with the other one having only hyperamylasemia [6]. The present study was undertaken for this reason.…”

“…Acute pancreatic involvement in patients with COVID-19 has recently been reported; acute pancreatitis was de ned on the basis of an elevation of serum pancreatic enzymes [5]. Con rmed cases of acute pancreatitis in COVID-19 patients have been anecdotally reported in two of three family members with the remaining one having only hyperamylasemia [6]. The present study was undertaken to assess the frequency of acute pancreatitis in consecutive patients affected by COVID-19.…”
