The Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic originated in Wuhan, China, and it rapidly spread across the globe halting all activities and confining everyone indoors. Almost all matters were limited to computer screens and the internet, including education. All the schools, colleges and universities resorted to online learning and teaching. This transition from traditional to online learning has occurred in almost all the educational institutions in Pakistan. E-learning brought many opportunities like safety from contracting COVID-19, time conservation and comfort of home. Challenges such as poor internet connection, inadequate experience with online study platforms and lack of motivation for students and teachers also came forward. The study concluded that 88.5% of students and 60% of faculty members preferred physical classes because of lack of focus and internet connectivity issues. 40% of the faculty faced internet connectivity issues, and 28% faced lack of participation as the main challenge. 74% of faculty members were familiar with MS Teams, while 26% were not. 65% of students did not find their level of assessment to be the same as it was in physical classes. Secondly, the opportunity for faculty was that 60% of the teachers found online teaching helpful in their financial stability during COVID-19. For students, the ability to continue their education despite the pandemic was the biggest advantage.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a highly challenging situation and affects people's lives severely. Nowadays, the original coronavirus gets mutated into different variants and infects all age groups. Elderly people with comorbidities like diabetes are highly susceptible to coronavirus infection due to poor glycemic control, and immunity. The mechanism of COVID-19 infection is not fully understood. However, the scenario of current infection is similar to the history of pandemics that the world faced earlier (i.e.) the persisted hyperglycemia is considered as the major root cause of severe viral infections. The uncontrolled hyperglycemia can produce low-grade inflammation and impaired immunity mediated cytokine storm that can cause multiple organs failure and sudden death in diabetic patients with COVID-19 infection. The available hypoglycemic and antiviral drugs and vaccines are not sufficiently efficient against COVID-19 and also cause several side effects. As the traditional medicines are considered life-saving drugs for various human diseases, the present review has analyzed the herbs-spices with antiviral, antidiabetic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties. The intake of this herbal-spices formulation could exert both therapeutic and prophylactic effects against the COVID-19. However, the proper scientific studies are necessary for the validation of its efficacy and mode of action against COVID-19.

The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) originated from China and spread globally within a short period. The spread of the first and second wave of COVID-19 were influenced by factors such as population density and weather changes. Areas that are densely populated have reported increased confirmed cases of COVID-19 compared to less populated areas. The main reason for this could be the fact that it is difficult to practice social distancing in overpopulated countries. With regards to temperature changes, most respiratory infections affect people when temperatures are low. This is exaggerated when there is increased air pollution in the environment. Economic factors have prevented countries to conduct a lockdown of epicentre towns and cities. This is in fear of an economic shut down because some cities are economic cornerstones of countries. Politically, most political leaders have failed to lockdown their countries for the fear of losing political support from their citizens. Further, some traditional and religious beliefs have also influenced the spread of COVID-19, thereby leading to increased morbidity and mortality globally. The spread of COVID-19 has been worsened by peoples negative perceptions and misinformation that COVID-19 is a myth, and thus relax to adhere to the recommended preventive measures. Besides, comorbidities, poor health-seeking behavior, and lack of vaccines, inadequate treatment modalities and test kits have worsened the failure to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. The initiation and implementation of COVID-19 vaccination programs will help reduce the disease burden. However, there is need to improve the awareness and uptake of COVID-19 vaccines globally. Low COVID-19 vaccine acceptability and uptake due vaccine hesitancy have been reported globally. Hence, there is a need for continuous community sensitisation and education programmes and campaigns on the benefits of vaccines in containing disease outbreaks.
