Coronary Disease Among United States Soldiers Killed in Action in Korea

Abstract: The demonstration here of multiple tubercles in the pleura of patients with tuberculous effusion would tend to indicate that direct pleural involvement in tuberculous pleural effusion is far more extensive than previously believed. Schuman 10 cites Jacobeus as noting multiple pleural tubercles in patients with effusion who were ex¬ amined by thoracoscopy. Auerbach (see table).Furthermore, there is no evidence that hypertension played a role in this disease process.

“…Again, histology was not possible in that study. In fact, coronary artery plaques have been shown to be present at an early age, 26 and even angiographically normal vessels may have early atheromatous lesions in young adults. 27 The present investigation used a novel monkey model of aging, 8 phylogenetically closer to humans but devoid of complications secondary to associated cardiovascular diseases.…”

“…Tau pathology seen in children and young adults, if confirmed, could modify our view on AD as deeply as the unexpected finding that young soldiers, killed in action in Korea, had signs of coronary atherosclerosis [6]: AD might not be a disease of the aged, but, as atheroma, a life-long disorder.…”

“…Studies of the coronary arteries of US service men killed during the Korean and Vietnam wars found that 77 and 45%, respectively, of the men had evidence of atherosclerosis. 4,5 Other studies, such as the Bogalusa Heart Study, have reported that fatty streaks and even atheromatous plaques are present in young children. 6 Professor David Barker and his co-workers in Southampton have shown that low birth weight is positively associated with subsequent hypertension and cardiovascular mortality.…”
