Corneal irregular astigmatism after laser in situ keratomileusis for myopia

Abstract: Conclusion-LASIKsignificantly increases the asymmetry component of the cornea which is dependent on the amount of laser ablation. (Br J Ophthalmol 2001;85:534-536)

“…1,2 Conventional myopic LASIK, however, increases irregular astigmatism, 3 which might be a cause of decreased contrast sensitivity and glare disability after surgery. [4][5][6][7] Our previous study indicated that corneal irregular astigmatism after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) significantly influences contrast sensitivity.…”

“…[83][84][85] Orbscan has had a significant effect on the assessment of refractive surgical techniques, from analysis of the effect of intracorneal rings 86,87 and planning wedge resection post-PKP 88 to the development of several custom ablation techniques using anterior elevation topography. [89][90][91] Further application of Orbscan has related anterior topographic asymmetry to the depth of ablation 92 ; however, the posterior surface of the cornea does not appear to develop distortion. 35 The implementation of a rigorous Orbscan screening protocol Change in height above best-fit sphere may reduce the low incidence of severe, detrimental keratectasia after laser refractive surgery.…”

“…Although this has not been correlated with postoperative astigmatism, the higher order aberrations combined with the pre-existing corneal aberrations will cause deterioration in visual and refractive outcomes. Baek et al 14 have reported that corneal irregular astigmatism increases after LASIK and this astigmatism is dependant on the ablation depth. Risk factors for postoperative astigmatism after LASIK RB Vajpayee et al…”
