Core services in the architecture of the national science digital library (NSDL)

Abstract: We describe the core components of the architecture for the (NSDL) National Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology Education Digital Library. Over time the NSDL will include heterogeneous users, content, and services. To accommodate this, a design for a technical and organization infrastructure has been formulated based on the notion of a spectrum of interoperability. This paper describes the first phase of the interoperability infrastructure including the metadata repository, search and discovery s… Show more

“…The concept of a repository for storing data is well developed in a range of fields, including the creation of digital libraries [58,59], education [60,61] and software development [62,63]. As product design becomes increasingly a global enterprise, the need for networked, collaborative tools to support design innovation has become more pronounced.…”

“…If the correlation is sufficiently high, then links from that HTML page are also followed. 1 Once the collections have been built, each of the items in a collection is represented by its URL and a figure of merit indicating the degree to which the item belongs to this collection.…”

“…What are the tools and techniques to build truly large scale digital libraries? Answering this question is crucial to the success of the National Science Digital Library (NSDL) project [1,2]. Our goal in NSDL is to build what will quite possibly be the largest and most diverse digital library to date.…”
