Core‐needle biopsy versus repeat fine‐needle aspiration for thyroid nodules initially read as atypia/follicular lesion of undetermined significance

Abstract: CNB is more useful than repeat FNAs for reducing inconclusive results and improving the diagnostic performance of thyroid nodules with initial AUS/FLUS FNA results. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Head Neck 39: 361-369, 2017.

“…Evaluation of the malignancy risk-stratification system showed good predictive accuracy, with AUCs of approximately 0.83. 12,13,31 In the present study, the risk of malignancy was 11.2% in AUS/FLUS thyroid nodules with a score of zero, with the malignancy risk rising as the score increased, reaching the highest risk at 98.1% for AUS/FLUS thyroid nodules with a score of 12. gap.kr/thyroidnodule_b3.php).…”

“…Furthermore, this system can calculate the malignancy risk according to a scoring system (for scores of 0-12, the risk of malignancy is 11.2%-98.1%) available on a website (www. [11][12][13]22,23,32,33 Recently, one study F IGUR E 3 An online resource for the easy calculation and summation of the scoring system for malignancy risk stratification using ultrasound (US) thyroid characteristics is available at http://www.gap.kr/thyroidnodule_b3.php [Color figure can be viewed at wileyonlinelibrary.com] evaluated the value of 5-tier TIRADS for the estimation of malignancy in nodules with AUS/FLUS subcategorized as cytologic atypia and architectural atypia. This web-based scoring system could be used in daily practice to calculate and estimate the risk of malignancy of thyroid nodules on the basis of ultrasound findings and biopsy results.…”

“…CNB has been suggested as an alternative to FNA in patients with previous nondiagnostic results [12] or atypia of undetermined significance [13]. It is also useful for the differentiation of rapidly growing thyroid tumors (lymphoma vs. anaplastic thyroid carcinoma), the differentiation of follicular lesions (follicular neoplasm vs. nodular hyperplasia), medullary thyroid carcinoma, calcified thyroid nodules, and degenerating thyroid nodules [6,14,15].…”
