Copula-based assimilation of radar and gauge information to derive bias-corrected precipitation fields

Abstract: Abstract. This study addresses the problem of combining radar information and gauge measurements. Gauge measurements are the best available source of absolute rainfall intensity albeit their spatial availability is limited. Precipitation information obtained by radar mimics well the spatial patterns but is biased for their absolute values. In this study copula models are used to describe the dependence structure between gauge observations and rainfall derived from radar reflectivity at the correspondin… Show more

“…This is quite a new way of measuring rainfall and has been under study by several researchers recently (Overeem et al, 2013;Zinevich et al, 2009). Most of the mentioned methods seek to use alternative devices which were intended originally for other purposes.…”

“…Here, to obtain a single value for air temperature, a choice for either the mean, or the median or the mode of a simulation provides a single value ̂1. In the literature, the mean value of the simulations is considered as a single realization (Laux et al 2011;Vogl et al 2012). The number of samples in the simulations, however, influences the 25 simulation of conditional quantiles.…”
