pi-Acceptor effects are often used to account for the unusual high lability of [Pt(terpy)L]((2)(-)(n)+) (terpy = 2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine) complexes. To gain further insight into this phenomenon, the pi-acceptor effect was varied systematically by studying the lability of [Pt(diethylenetriamine)OH(2)](2+) (aaa), [Pt(2,6-bis-aminomethylpyridine)OH(2)](2+) (apa), [Pt(N-(pyridyl-2-methyl)-1,2-diamino-ethane)OH(2)](2+) (aap), [Pt(bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine)OH(2)](2+) (pap), [Pt(2,2'-bipyridine)(NH(3))(OH(2))](2+) (app), and [Pt(terpy)OH(2)](2+) (ppp). The crystal structure of the apa precursor [Pt(2,6-bis-aminomethylpyridine)Cl]Cl.H(2)O was determined. The substitution of water by a series of nucleophiles, viz. thiourea, N,N-dimethylthiourea, N,N,N',N'-tetramethylthiourea, I(-), and SCN(-), was studied under pseudo-first-order conditions as a function of concentration, pH, temperature, and pressure, using stopped-flow techniques. The data enable an overall comparison of the substitution behavior of these complexes, emphasizing the role played by the kinetic cis and trans pi-acceptor effects. The results indicate that the cis pi-acceptor effect is larger than the trans pi-acceptor effect, and that the pi-acceptor effects are multiplicative. DFT calculations at the B3LYP/LACVP level of theory show that, by the addition of pi-acceptor ligands to the metal, the positive charge on the metal center increases, and the energy separation of the frontier molecular orbitals (E(LUMO) - E(HOMO)) of the ground state Pt(II) complexes decreases. The calculations collectively support the experimentally observed additional increase in reactivity when two pi-accepting rings are adjacent to each other (app and ppp), which is ascribed to "electronic communication" between the pyridine rings. The results furthermore indicate that the pK(a) value of the platinum bound water molecule is controlled by the pi-accepting nature of the chelate system and reflects the electron density around the metal center. This in turn controls the rate of the associative substitution reaction and was analyzed using the Hammett equation.

Geburtstag gewidmet Bei den Untersuchungen zum Substitutionsverhalten quadratisch-planarer d 8 -Low-spin-Komplexe hat man sich seit vielen Jahren intensiv mit dem s-trans-Einfluss oder dem trans-Effekt beschäftigt. [1] Im Falle von Pt II gab es eine Reihe detaillierter und systematischer Studien zu unterschiedlichen trans-Gruppen [2] mit einer groûen Bandbreite von Nucleophilen. [3] Die mechanistischen Untersuchungen machten deutlich, dass in der Regel Ligandensubstituionsreaktionen an Pt II -Komplexen über einen assoziativen Mechanismus ablaufen, bei dem eine trigonal-bipyramidale Zwischenstufe durchlaufen wird. In den letzten Jahren sind Aktivierungsvolumina DV = aus kinetischen Messungen bei hohem Druck zur mechanistischen Aufklärung der Reaktionswege herangezogen worden; die negativen Werte weisen auf den assoziativen Reaktionsweg hin. [4] Neueren experimentellen Befunden zufolge läuft der Austausch einiger Sulfide oder Sulfoxide an Pt II -Komplexen wie cis-[PtPh 2 (Et 2 S) 2 ], cis-[PtPh 2 (Me 2 S) 2 ] und [Pt(bph)(SR 2 ) 2 ] (R Me, Et; bph Biphenyl) unter Beteiligung eines s-trans-Einflusses und/oder eines trans-Effekts nach einem dissoziativen Mechanismus über eine dreifach koordinierte Zwischenstufe ab. [5] Es ist ebenfalls lange bekannt, dass die Geschwindigkeit von Substitutionen an Pt II -Komplexen erhöht werden kann, wenn starke p-Acceptorgruppen am Metallzentrum koordiniert werden. [5, 6] Diese Beschleunigung ist das Resultat eine Verringerung der Ladung am Metall durch den gewählten Liganden infolge der Rückbindung von Elektronen aus den gefüllten Pt II -d-Orbitalen in die leeren antibindenden oder nichtbindenden Liganden-Orbitale. [7] Die erweiterte Hückel-Theorie, molekulare elektrostatische Potentiale und Abinitio-Rechnungen sind verwendet worden, um die p-Acceptoreigenschaften von einzelnen Liganden zu beschreiben. [5] Weiterhin wird der p-Effekt als ein wichtiger Faktor bei der Suche nach einem Mechanismuswechsel bei quadratischplanaren Komplexen angenommen. Das Ersetzen eines Thioetherliganden durch CO, das als p-Acceptorligand am Pt II -Zentrum in Systemen wie cis-[PtR 2 L S 2 ] (R Me, Ph; L S R 2 S, Me 2 SO) [5] fungieren kann, verhindert, dass die Reaktion als p-Acceptorligand am Pt II -Zentrum nach einem dissoziativen Mechanismus abläuft, d. h., die Möglichkeit zur p-Rückbindung sorgt im Falle der Thioether-Pt II -Komplexe für den Wechsel im Reaktionsmechanismus.Trotz der wichtigen Frage nach dem Einfluss von p-Acceptorliganden auf die Substitutionreaktionen an Pt II -Komplexen gab es bisher noch keine genaue und systematische Untersuchung des p-Acceptoreffekts (cis und trans). In der Absicht, einen tieferen Einblick in dieses Phänomen zu gewinnen, wurde der Einfluss dieses Effekts in cis-und trans-Position detailliert an Monoaqua-Pt II -Komplexen mit dreizähnigen N-Donorliganden untersucht.
