Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) have emerged as a modern real-time energy management architecture that seeks to synergistically coordinate an aggregation of renewable and non-renewable generation systems to overcome some of the fundamental limitations of traditional power grids dominated by synchronous machines. In this survey paper, we review the different existing and emerging feedback control mechanisms and architectures used for the real-time operation of VPPs. In contrast to other works that have mostly focused on the optimal dispatch and economical aspects of VPPs in the hourly and daily time scales, in this paper we focus on the dynamic nature of the system during the faster sub-hourly time scales. The virtual (i.e., software-based) component of a VPP, combined with the power plant (i.e., physics-based) components of the power grid, make VPPs prominent examples of cyber-physical systems, where both continuous-time and discrete-time dynamics play critical roles in the stability and transient properties of the system. We elaborate on this interpretation of VPPs as hybrid dynamical systems, and we further discuss open research problems and potential research directions in feedback control systems that could contribute to the safe development and deployment of autonomous VPPs.INDEX TERMS Smart grids, renewable energy, virtual power plant, feedback control, multi-agent hybrid dynamical systems.

Inverter air-conditioning (IAC) units have been proved to be effective in frequency regulation by providing flexible capacities. This paper proposes a brain emotional learning (BEL)-based controller to provide the IACs with control signals to be efficiently involved in the frequency regulation in power systems. The BEL-based controller can learn quickauto, making it appropriate in systems facing uncertainty. To assess the BEL controller performance in realistic conditions, the uncertainties as a consequence of variations in system parameters and load level are considered. The goal is to use the BEL controller to increase the IAC units' ability to track regulation signals accurately in uncertain circumstances. The controller is compared to a fuzzy-PI control, a proportional control scheme, a model predictive control and a linear quadratic regulator control. A delay-dependent stability criterion is used to calculate the highest time delay in the IACs response under which the system maintains stability. In addition, this paper presents an BEL-based coordinator to coordinate the IACs and traditional generation units for compensating considerable frequency variations caused by the time delays. Case studies are accomplished on a multi-area power system in MATLAB/Simulink environment. Eventually, real-time verifications by OPAL-RT real-time digital simulator on the simulated power system are executed to assess the control method.

In this paper, a data mining based valve flow curve optimization technique is proposed. Firstly, the data mining technique is described. Then, a valve flow curve optimization method based on improved cluster analysis is proposed. Finally, the effectiveness of these methods was verified through experiments. The results show that the valve flow curve optimization technique based on data mining can effectively improve the performance and reliability of the valve.
