Convex Curvature Effects on Film Cooling Adiabatic Effectiveness

Abstract: Surface curvature is known to have significant effects on film cooling performance, with convex curvature inducing increased film effectiveness and concave curvature causing decreased film effectiveness. Generally, these curvature effects have been presumed to scale with 2r/d at the film cooling hole location, where r is the radius of curvature and d is coolant hole diameter. In this study, the validity of this scaling of curvature effects are examined by performing experiments in regions of large and low curv… Show more

“…Winka et al [10] took the study of convex surfaces further and examined how the non-uniform curvature of an airfoil affected film effectiveness. By comparing several different combinations of hole location and size, it was possible to deduce that the local curvature r, local curvature ratio 2 r/d and curvature of the entire downstream region play a significant role in the film to mainstream mixing.…”

“…The surface curvature is an essential parameter that governs the coolant coverage and jet lift-off. Numerous fundamental studies have been carried out to highlight the effect of surface curvature [10][11][12][13].…”
