Conversion to bodybuilding

Abstract: International audienceThis article aims to study the process of conversion to bodybuilding in order to understand how some gym enthusiasts progressively organise their lives around this activity. Our observations, drawn from an ethnography of a gym and 30 semi-structured interviews with different profiles of gym-goers in French-speaking Switzerland, suggest that the grip that bodybuilding takes on individuals results from processes akin to conversions. Two paths to conversion - consonant and introspective - ar… Show more

“…La deuxième caractéristique de ces bodybuilders brésiliens est que leurs pratiques de dopage sont plus facilement rendues publiques que dans d'autres cas (COQUET et al, 2014), ce qui laisse à penser que la prise de produits est plus normalisée dans cette région du Brésil que dans d'autres pays.…”

“…This experience of relegation, which happened in different contexts (training, championships, moments shared with his friends), led him to an awareness of all the sacrifices he had made in order to follow his vocation. Among other things, he realized that some of the difficulties he encountered were partly due to the strong level of symbolic imprisonment which goes hand in hand with his sporting accomplishments (concerning the effects of conversion on conjugal trajectories, see Coquet et al, 2016: 827).…”

“…Thus, throughout different phases of talent identification, selection and confirmation orchestrated by sports institutions, athletes are invited to work on themselves and transform themselves both physically and symbolically (Papin, 2007). In fact, the construction of a performing body involves a conversion process (Coquet et al, 2016; Wacquant, 1992) thanks to which athletes gradually focus on the quest for maximal efficiency – ultimately building a self-image solely based on their sport and considering that this life project was freely built. This conversion is essential for supporting the heavy price of a practice which becomes more and more intense, restrictive, exclusive and stressful (Burlot et al, 2018; Roderick, 2006; Theberge, 2008; Wacquant, 1995b).…”

“…Furthermore, learning to be vegan requires practice; just as converts to Islam learn how to recite daily prayers (Galonnier and De Los Rios ), converts to veganism learn how to respond to negative comments or how to frame veganism as political rather than dietary (Christopher, Bartkowski, and Haverda ; Fox and Ward ). Similarly, in a study on body building, Coquet et al () contend that people transform themselves into body builders by changing their lifestyle practices and by reorganizing their daily lives around their workouts; they must learn how to eat differently, how to prepare for meets, and how to work out to maximize their gains while forming new worldviews to understand themselves and their bodies differently than “ordinary” gym users. Thus, our definition of conversion includes socialization into any new set of beliefs and practices (religious or nonreligious) that is evidenced by changing and reorganizing daily behaviors and routines around this new identity.…”

“…However, this narrow focus suggests that scholars have yet to fully explore how transformative and impactful experiences can reshape secular worldviews and daily practices. Similar conversion language is used for other transformative events, including coming out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (Bryant and Lamb ) or becoming a committed body builder (Coquet, Ohl, and Roussel ). Thus, our first contribution comes via our extension of conversion to secular transformations: instances where students adapt new practices and beliefs in their secular identities that parallel changes experienced by religious converts.…”
