Conversion of biomass to biofuels and life cycle assessment: a review

Abstract: The global energy demand is projected to rise by almost 28% by 2040 compared to current levels. Biomass is a promising energy source for producing either solid or liquid fuels. Biofuels are alternatives to fossil fuels to reduce anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Nonetheless, policy decisions for biofuels should be based on evidence that biofuels are produced in a sustainable manner. To this end, life cycle assessment (LCA) provides information on environmental impacts associated with biofuel production c… Show more

“…The midpoint categories are aggregated to present results as endpoint categories such as human health, damage to ecosystem quality in the form of loss of species and resources depletion (Osman et al 2021b). It is argued that the environmental impacts should be presented as midpoint categories to prevent oversimplification or misinterpretation of environmental impacts (Kalbar et al 2017).…”

“…The study focuses on a sawmill located in Santiago Papasquiaro at the State of Durango, Mexico, which is the main timber forest national producer supplying 35.1% of wood, where 1591,141 round m 3 are destined for sawing, 394,737 round m 3 for pulp, 286,042 round m 3 for sheet and plywood, 13,763 round m 3 for posts, and finally 71,239 round m 3 for fuels with a total of 2,356,922 round m 3 with a monetary value of US$ 130,473,626 [7]. The unit round m 3 is used in sawmills and represents the volume of roundwood or sawn wood (logs from debarked trees) in m 3 . The mass varies according to the species.…”

“…In fact, waste to energy projects is a form of energy recovery. It has been reported that waste-derived feedstocks could provide more sustainable energy sources by mitigating impacts on land use and water depletion incurred during the production of energy crops [3]. However, questions about the ecological consequences of the intensive use of biomass and the environmental impacts associated are important and are currently being discussed [1,4].…”

“…The production of vegetable oil from sunflower seeds involves a number of by-products, namely: husk, cake, meal, phosphatide concentrate, soapstock, bleaching clays and others [4]. The main cause of environmental pollution is the openness of the resource cycle, which leads to the accumulation of waste [5]. Efficient processing of production waste is the key to production greening, provided by the introduction of the latest scientific research, energy-efficient resource-saving technologies, low-waste, waste-free technological processes.…”
