There is broad agreement on the positive impact of social interaction on students' learning. However, it has not been analysed whether the role they play in the learning environment is related in some way to the interaction among them. In this study, the relationship between the role played by an actor in a learning environment and the frequency and quality of the social interactions is analysed. An activity was designed to foster and facilitate social interaction among students using the WhatsApp platform. This initiative thoughtfully outlined various roles that students could undertake, alongside establishing specific categories meticulously designed to facilitate the comprehensive analysis and quantification of the quality of these interactions. A comprehensive analysis was conducted on a substantial dataset consisting of a total of 1,136 messages. With these data, a correlation analysis was conducted with the Kruskal-Wallis's test and then a post-hoc test with the Mann-Whitney U test was also performed. The results show that there is no relationship between the role played by actors and the interaction they conduct in a learning environment. Another reading of the same point is that any effort to promote social interaction in learning environments will benefit all the actors involved, regardless of the role they play.

One of the most used communication tools is WhatsApp, which increased its use due to covid-19, along with other social networks. In the educational field, students are also increasingly adopting this application for academic purposes from their computers called WhatsApp Web. However, more knowledge is needed about the factors that influence the acceptance and use of this social network. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to understand from the perspective of students the factors of acceptance and use of WhatsApp Web for academic purposes during the covid-19 pandemic. A qualitative methodology was used to achieve this objective, through fourteen semistructural interviews with students from various disciplines and universities. The findings of this study were analyzed with the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT). Where a fifth factor teamworkwas incorporated, being additional to the factors already existing in this theory (the expectation of performance, the expectation of effort, the social influence and the facilitating conditions). This study provides new insights as it is a pioneering research that UTAUT uses to interpret the acceptance and use of WhatsApp Web for academic purposes.

<p>The present work presents an example of using Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) in Foreign Language Teaching (FLT) with the aim to increase students’ hours of exposure to English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Since class time is sometimes limited, it is necessary to look for reinforcement tasks for students to properly develop literacy and communication skills. In addition, CMC is considered by scholars a new variety of language, with its own features and rules, one that students must master as well as other traditional language varieties. As secondary goals, this project intended to develop students’ motivation, autonomy, linguistic awareness and cooperative learning. By using a Mobile Instant Messaging (MIM) application, Remind, students were encouraged to communicate in groups and, thereby, supplement hours of practicing the foreign language outside the classroom, without limitation of time and space. Students evaluated the task by means of an online questionnaire and results proved to be positive, showing that they enjoyed the activity and considered it useful and effective. Moreover, they realised the importance of cooperative learning, of responsibility and of being aware of their own learning process. Likewise, the real and authentic purpose of communication enhanced motivation among students.</p>
