Controlling the Growth of Molecular Crystal Aggregates with Distinct Linear and Nonlinear Optical Properties

Abstract: Two novel donor-acceptor molecules, 2,7-diphenylbenzo[1,2-b:4,3-b']difuran-4,5-dicarbonitrile and 2,7-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)benzo[1,2-b:4,3-b']difuran-4,5-dicarbonitrile containing cyano group as the electron acceptor, were synthesized. Their single-crystal structures, molecular packing, and self-assembly behaviors were also investigated. By simple solvent evaporation techniques, these compounds self-assemble into various low-dimensional microstructures that demonstrate distinctive nonlinear optical properties d… Show more

“…[29] Similar with molecular backbones, electron donors are also designed based on π-conjugated systems like fundamental phenyl heterocyclic rings. [20,21,30,31] Carbazole group [22,32,33] is one of the most popularly adopted electron donors in ICT compounds synthesis. Two phenyl rings fused with nitrogen compose a large planar π system, which can supply sufficient delocalized electrons.…”

“…(L) NLO spectra of DBD and BBD. Reproduced with permission: Copyright 2017, ACS [21] in chloroform/cyclohexane system ( Figure 6). Lipophilic solvents chloroform and cyclohexane widened the space between adjacent layers by reducing hydrogen bonding interactions of hydrophilic glycol side chains.…”

“…These strategies also cause changes in second-order hyperpolarizability, responsible for third-order nonlinear optical effects, such as the absorption of two photons. One of the likely applications of two-photon absorption (TPA) is optical limiting, which can be used as power regulation and protection devices in optical networks [15][16][17][18].…”

“…In particular, the tailor-made molecular structures of organic NLO dyes allow for hierarchical self-assembled architectures on the micro-and nano-scales by multiple supramolecular interactions [3,12,13]. This results in subwavelength scale materials with very well-defined structures and therefore highly anistropic optical properties, serving as ideal building blocks for integrated photonic circuit applications [12,[14][15][16][17].…”
