Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score is a prognostic factor in patients with resected breast cancer

Abstract: CONUT could easily be calculated from blood examination data. Recently, it has been shown that CONUT is an independent prognostic marker in malignant pleural mesothelioma 22 , resected lung squamous cell carcinoma 23 , gastric cancer 4 , and head and neck cancer 24. However, its role in breast cancer has not been reported. To our knowledge, we firstly attempted to assess the prognostic significance of CONUT in breast cancer patients who received curative resection based on a large study. “…Controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score is a relatively new immuno-nutritional biomarker, which has the advantages of simplicity, low cost and comprehensibility. Derived from total cholesterol, total lymphocyte count and serum albumin, it can assist in the assessment of nutritional status during hospitalization ( 37 , 38 ). In two studies of patients with hilar cholangiocarcinoma after intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and adjuvant therapy, a high CONUT score was identified as an independent predictor of poor OS prognosis ( 19 , 30 ).…”

“…In the current study, we find that the NCCN 2017 is also feasible for elderly patients with 65 years old or older. The nutritional status assessments using GNRI; BMI and serum level of Alb, PNI; serum level of Alb and TLC, and CONUT score; serum level of Alb, TLC and T-chol, are developed to predict tolerability to cancer treatment in the elderly patients with solid tumors 3,4,[15][16][17] . Recently, the CONUT score has been shown to predict prognosis in patients with some hematological malignancies [5][6][7][8] .…”

“…Controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score is a composite index that combines the subjects' serum albumin level, total lymphocyte count, and cholesterol level to quantify (15). In recent years, CONUT has been proven to be an independent prognostic factor of cancer and has played a role in treating various cancers such as gastrointestinal cancer, liver cancer, and breast cancer (16)(17)(18).…”
