Controlled Self‐Assembly of Amphiphilic Oligopeptides into Shape‐Specific Nanoarchitectures

Abstract: Here, we report a novel, programmable, molecular self-assembling system to fabricate shape-specific, three-dimensional nanoarchitectures. Three types of simple 16-mer peptides consisting of hydrophobic Leu and hydrophilic Lys, LKL16, KLK16, and LK16, were prepared as building blocks for nanofabrications. A detailed analysis of the conformation and self-assembling mechanism was performed by using circular dichroism (CD), FTIR spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). A wide variety of self-assembled nano… Show more

“…In fact, the Langmuir monolayers of b-sheet peptides were reported to work as templates and nucleate the formation of CdS nanocrystallites at the air-water interface. 2 Recently, we demonstrated that an amphiphilic artificial peptide can self-assemble into b-sheet nanofiber architectures, [3][4][5] the surfaces of which have potential as a novel nanotemplate. 6 Stupp's group 7 and Mihara's group 8 used b-sheet peptide nanofibers with surface-binding sites as nanotemplates to accomplish the one-dimensional organization of functional materials such as gold nanoparticles and proteins.…”

“…Langmuir monolayers of b-sheet peptides were, for example, reported to function as templates and serve as nuclei for the formation of inorganic nanocrystallites at the air-water interface. 12 Recently, numerous research groups have demonstrated that amphiphilic peptides self-assemble into b-sheet nanofiber architectures, [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20] the surface of which has potential as a novel nanotemplate. [21][22][23] Several groups [24][25][26][27] have separately used b-sheet peptide nanofibers as templates to organize diacetylenes or dienes and promote their topochemical polymerization.…”

“…The preparation of LKL16 and its self-assembling properties in water have been described elsewhere. 7 The azo(COO À ) 2 was synthesized by reacting the 4,4 0 -azodianiline with succinic anhydride. Photoisomerization of the azo(COO À ) 2 was first of all investigated in the presence of LKL16 at pH 9.2.…”

“…In particular, much attention has been focused on the biological -sheet motif because of their association with neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, and as a building unit in the design of supramolecular nanofibers. [2][3][4][5][6][7] Recently, we have reported that the triblock-type amphiphilic peptide,…”
