Controlled growth of carbon nanotubes on electrodes under different bias polarity

Abstract: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) of different alignments, such as surface-bounded and vertically aligned arrays, enable applications in different fields. In this study, controlled growth of CNTs with different alignments was achieved by electrically biasing catalyzed electrodes with different polarities in a laser-assisted chemical vapor deposition process. CNT growth was suggested to be guided by the movement of electrically charged catalyst-nanoparticles under the influence of an external electric field. This discove… Show more

“…Traditional methods of CNT synthesis via CVD or arc discharge were able to create long CNTs but in a highly tangled fashion. Gao et al was able to achieve various alignments of CNTs on an electrode surface by the application of electrical biases at different polarities during laser-assisted CVD CNT growth (Gao et al 2009 ). Vertically-aligned CNTs produced on the cathode from this method were observed to have a neat and clean edge.…”

“…In the case of growing aligned CNTs during the growth process, a self‐biased electric field can be applied to the substrate to help align the CNTs . An external electric field is normally used to achieve field‐directed growth of horizontally aligned CNTs on substrates . Typically, SWCNTs can be field directed along the electric field direction above 130 kV m −1 DC field strength or above 250 kV m −1 AC field strength.…”

“…We anticipate in this paper that the application of an electric field during the synthesis will induce such an external force over the ionized molecules (as a consequence of the cracking temperature in catalyst and carbon molecules). Such forces must stimulate a tip or base growing during the The growth of CNTs in the presence of electric fields has previously been studied by many authors (Nojeh et al 2004;Gao et al 2009;Dittmer et al 2004;Bower et al 2000;Zhang et al 2001), with the result that in all cases a growing trend is observed in the field direction. All these experimental assemblies were designed on a microscopic scale allowing studying the growth dynamics of individual CNTs.…”
