Controlled Fabrication of High-Quality Carbon Nanoscrolls from Monolayer Graphene

Abstract: We report a simple and effective way of fabricating high-quality carbon nanoscrolls (CNSs), using isopropyl alcohol solution to roll up monolayer graphene predefined on SiO(2)/Si substrates. Transmission electron microscopy studies reveal that the CNS has a tube-like structure with a hollow core surrounded by graphene walls 0.35 nm apart. Raman spectroscopy studies show that the CNS is free of significant defects, and the electronic structure and phonon dispersion are slightly different from those of two-dimen… Show more

“…From highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) to the final products, Geim and his colleagues rubbed lithographically patterned pillars and used Scotch tape to perform the thinning of the graphite stuck to the SiO 2 /Si sheets [10]. This mechanical exfoliation method is very easy, and the graphite materials can be readily obtained.…”

“…Despite of this drawback, many unexpected electronic properties of the graphene sheet can be explored by this method. As micromechanical cleavage of HOPG was first employed to obtain single-layer graphene [10], various methods of graphene synthesis have been reported, including epitaxial growth on an insulator surface such as SiC [11] and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on surfaces of transition metals such as Ni and Cu [12,13]. Comparing with the mechanical exfoliation method, this method is very suitable for the industrial production of single-layer graphene with large areas, which have great potential application as sensors and transparent conductive films.…”

“…This would bring w b close to the value estimated from the tapering angle. Instead of making a single fold, a monolayer graphene can scroll, but this transformation works only in solution with alcohol, which helps the graphene layer to detach from the substrate [42]. The gr-gr interlayer interaction is about a factor of two larger in a scroll than in a single fold, because there is an interaction on both faces of graphene in most part of the scroll.…”

“…Kaxiras's group also investigate arbitrarily shaped graphene nanoflakes with focuses on the spin properties and propose spintronic nanoscale devices by sculpting graphene fragments and exploiting the shape dependence of magnetic properties (Wang et al, 2007). Other nanostructures of graphene such as twists (Bets & Yakobson, 2009;Gunlycke et al, 2010) and scrolls (Xie et al, 2009;Shi et al, 2010) also have interesting electronic properties and potential applications.…”
