Control of the pretilt angle for liquid crystal alignment using novel electrospray deposition methods with two capillaries

Abstract: The electrospray deposition (ESD) method is an established film‐forming technique. To control the pretilt angle on films, we developed two novel ESD methods for spraying two kinds of solutions containing alignment materials. One method is a simultaneous spraying method, while the other is a time‐divided spraying method. When we used the simultaneous‐spraying ESD method, we observed numerous fine liquid crystal (LC) domains with a diameter of approximately 10 µm in the LC cell. These LC domains were substantial… Show more

“…[1] These droplets form due to competing interactions between surface tension and Coulombic repulsions. [2][3][4][5] ESD has been employed in several application areas, ranging from semiconductors to biotechnology, [6][7][8][9][10][11][12] as this process shows great promise as an emerging technology for surface coating applications. [1][2] With respect to photovoltaics and drug delivery, DOI: 10.1002/admi.202300982 ESD is particularly appealing for thin film coatings as it can effectively limit material loss as well as its facile production.…”

“…Several methods of LC lenses fabrication are known having common approach of LC cell with refractive index gradient in the bulk of the LC layer, achieved because of applied voltage gradients (patterned electrode), inhomogeneous cell gaps, inhomogeneous polymer‐stabilized networks formation in the bulk of the LC cell (combined with nonuniform electrodes), various modes based on patterned planar and homeotropic alignment materials, etc. The special interests for application in light‐field display are technologies for tunable LC microlens' arrays creation.…”

“…When the ESD method was used to form an alignment film comprising numerous small domains with two types of alignment materials for the horizontal and vertical alignment, the pretilt angle was controlled using simple equipment in the atmosphere [15]. Fur- thermore, the selective coating method was proposed for the system with two types of alignment materials, for example the horizontal and vertical alignment materials [17].…”
