Control of Photovoltaic Systems for Enhanced Short-Term Voltage Stability and Recovery

Abstract: This paper investigates the impact of: i) the Low Voltage Ride-Through (LVRT) and Dynamic Voltage Support (DVS) capability; ii) the active current recovery rate; iii) the local voltage control; and iv) the plant-level voltage control of large-scale PhotoVoltaic (PV) systems on Short-Term (ST) voltage stability and Fault-Induced Delayed Voltage Recovery (FIDVR). Moreover, the influence on transient and frequency stability is studied briefly. To evaluate FIDVR, a novel metric, the socalled Voltage Recovery Index… Show more

“…As stated earlier, for the single-phase motors (such as RACs), when the voltage magnitude of motor drops lower than a specified value, known as the stalling voltage, the motor goes into the blocked rotor condition in a few cycles, which is the so-called as stall regime. In fact, because the electrical torque decreases by dropping voltage and the mechanical torque of RACs is constant [22], the electrical torque cannot meet the mechanical torque in this condition [23]. In response, the active and reactive power consumptions of RAC increase, significantly, and result in jumping the absorbed current of compressor motor about three to seven times its rated value following the fault removal.…”

“…In contrast, too high of a value for Rrpwr could potentially result in frequency problems due to high frequency sensitivity [15]. Another important aspect which the value Rrpwr influences is the critical clearing time (CCT), larger values of Rrpwr increase the CCT [15,33]. In [15,23], the value of 10 pu/s is used for Rrpwr, this is seen as a typical value to represent solar PV plants.…”

“…The photovoltaic (PV) industry is continuously growing, and solar power plants are connected to the electric grid on a large scale. The prices of PV systems were continuously decreasing during the last decade [1][2][3][4][5]. The International Governmental Support in many countries, in addition to the great competition in the PV industry, yield to a further decrease in the capital expenditures of PV systems along with improvements in equipment efficiency and capacity factor.…”
