Control of a wind power station with the strategy of a conventional power plant: Assigning synchronous machine behavior on a full inverter based wind power station

Abstract: Integration of wind power stations in primary control of the grid can be necessary in future. One solution to solve this problem is the emulation of a turbine and a generator such as in conventional power plants. The model is split into two parts: The grid-side inverter is controlled by a model of a separately excited synchronous machine with amortisseur in combination with torque and excitation voltage control. On the other side the physical generator is controlled by a virtual turbine that has to keep the vo… Show more

“…Hence, an ESS with larger rated power and energy capacity is able to provide stronger frequency response ability to WFs. Since the frequency stability of a power grid only consists of synchronous generations is already satisfactory [16, 27], enabling WFs to provide similar short‐term frequency response ability to that of SGs could achieve an appropriate compromise between the frequency response demand and the ESS cost.…”

“…Many other contributions related to virtual synchronous machines and similar controllers can be found in the literature. For instance, [69] studies the control of a full-converter wind turbine where the generator side converter emulates the turbine of a conventional plant, and the grid side converter reproduces the associated synchronous generator, whereas the DC link acts as a virtual transmission shaft.…”
