Contribution of GRACE Satellite Mission to the Determination of Orthometric/Normal Heights Corrected for Their Dynamics—A Case Study of Poland

Abstract: Physical heights were traditionally determined without considering the dynamic processes of the Earth induced from temporal mass variations. The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission provided valuable data that allow the estimation of geoid/quasigeoid height changes and vertical deformations of the Earth’s surface induced from temporal mass loading, and thereby temporal variations of physical heights. The objective of this investigation is to discuss the determination of orthometric/normal he… Show more

Overall, the results obtained indicate the need of Δ𝐻/Δ𝐻 * for the determination of accurate orthometric/normal heights that fulfil the contemporary geodetic scientific requirements and high-precision applications associated with physical heights (Szelachowska et al, 2022).…”

“…Significant efforts of the IGiK's team have been put into the estimation of orthometric/normal height changes (Δ𝐻/Δ𝐻 * ) over 24 large river basins (Godah et al, 2020c) as well as for the areas of Turkey (Öztürk et al, 2020) and Poland (Szelachowska et al, 2022) using GRACE satellite mission data. For the river basin of a weak hydrological signal, such as the Orange river basin, Δ𝐻/Δ𝐻 * do not exceed ±1 cm, while Δ𝐻/Δ𝐻 * can reach 8 cm in the case of the river basin of strong hydrological signal, e.g.…”

“…Currently, through GNSS technology, the geodetic coordinates (φ, λ, h) of a point of interest on Earth are effectively determined. However, the exact values of the normal heights (HN) of these points should still be determined on the basis of geometric leveling [2,3]. The object of the study is the territory of Lebanon, where there is neither official national geoid model, nor gravimetric data, and accordingly, there is no state altitude network.…”
