Contrasting Population Demographics of Invasive Silver Carp between an Impounded and Free‐Flowing River

Abstract: Extensive research has been conducted on Silver Carp Hypopthalmicthys molitrix in the heavily modified Illinois River in the midwestern United States due to the potential for populations to enter the Great Lakes; however, little research has been conducted on populations in unimpounded rivers. The Wabash River is an unimpounded large river in the U.S. Midwest that may be a good model for studying Silver Carp in unregulated river ecosystems that could potentially be invaded if reproducing populations in the Gre… Show more

“…For example, during 2009, a strong year‐class of Silver Carp identified herein and during other studies within the Illinois River (Morgeson ; Stuck et al. ) coincided with high river discharges. However, large year‐classes of Silver Carp in the middle Illinois River were also reported in 2008 (Gibson‐Reinemer et al.…”

“…For example, Silver Carp populations from Illinois River (Stuck et al. ) and Wabash River (Morgeson ) sites produced stronger year‐classes during 2009, when high, sustained discharge events were present for greater than 3 months (USGS ). In other studies, similar patterns have been qualitatively discussed (Hayer et al.…”

“…In the Illinois River, Silver Carp can reach 200 mm TL by age 1 (Stuck et al. ), and based on typical Largemouth Bass length frequencies in this system (Raibley et al. ), would be too large to be effectively consumed by these predators (i.e., prey > 50% predator TL: Einfalt et al.…”

“…Fish total length was also included in the full model as a fixed effect as bigheaded carp groups in different years and pools differed in initial length (evaluated using generalised linear model [Gaussian] with hybrid group as fixed effect and pool and year as random effects, F 4,556 = 213, p < 0.0001). Fish total length at the time a movement was made was estimated by combining the total length when the individual was tagged (Table S1) with estimated growth in the time since tagging using observed growth rates of silver carp from the Illinois River (Stuck, Porreca, Wahl, & Colombo, ). Bighead carp growth rates for the Illinois River and growth rates of different hybrid bigheaded carps were not available in the literature for the study period, which precluded using different growth rates for the different bigheaded carp groups.…”
