Abstract: Contrast-enhanced ultrasound facilitates the visualization of vascularization even in small adrenal masses, but it does not help to distinguish malignant and benign lesions.

“…If adrenal lesions are observed incidentally, the differential diagnosis based on ultrasound appearances should consider malignant adrenal lesions, particularly adrenal cortical carcinomas and pheochromocytomas [3,58]. The present study showed the reliability of ultrasound imaging in the characterization of adrenal masses.…”

“…The role of adrenal imaging is to differentiate benign ‘leave-alone’ lesions (e.g., adrenocortical adenoma, myelolipoma, and cyst) from suspicious lesions (e.g., pheochromocytoma, metastasis, adrenal cortical carcinoma, and adrenal lymphoma) that warrant further managements [2]. Simple and inexpensive, ultrasound has been widely used in the detection of adrenal masses [38]. However, most studies have relied on the follow-up (sometimes short-term follow-up) or results of CT/MRI imaging to confirm the nature of adrenal lesions.…”

“…The study by Dietrich et al indicated ineptitude to distinguish malignant and benign lesions [6]. On the contrary Friedrich-Rust at al suggested that contrast-enhanced ultrasound may be a useful method in diagnostic work-up of adrenal mass with excellent sensitivity for the diagnosing of malignancy [7].…”

“…CEUS and CE-EUS, both cannot reliably differentiate between benign (endocrine tumors and adenomas) and malignant adrenal masses50 despite some controversial discussion of the subject 51. Adrenal cysts, lipoma and myelolipoma demonstrate a characteristic B-mode US morphology.…”
