“…Color and power Doppler were introduced to detect increased vascularity within the prostate that may correlate with prostate cancer [3,4,23,24]. More recently, microbubble-enhanced Doppler TRUS has shown improvement over unenhanced LoTRUS in identifying prostate cancer foci [25][26][27][28]. However, mixed reports on the utility of such technologies, and modest improvements demonstrated in cancer detection over unenhanced LoTRUS have limited their widespread adoption.…”

“…Patel and Rickards, 9 based on the results of 274 biopsies, considered the CDU to be relatively useful in the diagnosis of neoplastic pathologies. Borges et al, 10 on the other hand, were the first to report on the use of Levovist s in 18 patients with suspected PCa, revealing a sensitivity of 85 against 77% for the TRUS; they quoted, in addition, six patients with normal TRUS and a positive contrast-enhancement in three of them (all these patients harbored a neoplasm). Recently, Halpern et al 11 have demonstrated that targeted biopsy performed on the basis of high-frequency color or Doppler findings will miss a substantial number of cancers detected with a modified sextant biopsy approach with laterally directed cores.…”

“…The extra reXectors of US signals in the blood Xow after the administration of microbubbles enhance the Doppler signal. The sensitivity of PDCEUS in biopsy controlled studies is reported between 65 and 93% [4,26,41,44]. However, speciWcity is still relatively low and clinical additional value is disputable [31].…”
