Attention and memory have typically been studied as distinct topics in the fields of cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience. However, attention powerfully influences what we learn, and the act of remembering can, itself, be viewed as an act of selective, internally oriented attention. Here, we consider the relationship between attention and memory across multiple forms of memory, including episodic memory, implicit memory, and working memory. Moreover, we consider how attention is related not only to behavioral expressions of memory but also to the neural mechanisms that are involved in memory.
