Continuing the quest for autoimmunity due to oral metal exposure

Abstract: The results of this study support the view that development of metal contact allergies may prevent autoimmune activation, and, second, that oral exposure to Pd, Au or Hg does not facilitate the development of AID.

“…Furthermore, reactions to palladium are observed in about 50% of patients with an allergy to nickel [ 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 ]. In the study by Rachmawati et al, 80% of patients (25) with a positive test reaction to nickel also showed sensitization to palladium salts [ 31 ]. In the study by Raap et al, (2009), all patients (100%, 10) with nickel sensitization also showed a positive patch-test response to palladium [ 32 ].…”

“…No thyroid antibodies were found on sensitization to palladium, gold and mercury. In contrast, thyroid antibodies were detected in patients with nickel sensitization [ 31 ]. In the study by Muris et al (2014), patients with palladium-containing dental alloys showed an increased epicutaneous test response and lymphocyte proliferation [ 49 ].…”

“…Exposure to metal ions in the oral cavity can cause adverse reactions, such as inflammatory effects, allergic reactions, and mutagenic effects, depending on the concentration of metal ions released. Immunotoxicity of dental alloy is largely due to the release of Ni 2+ ions, which can cause several local symptoms such as oral lichen(oid) lessions/oral lichen planus (OLL/OLP) to autoimmune disease (AID) and neurotoxicity [6].…”
