Contextual learning strategies in the early stages of architecture education

Abstract: The main objective of this paper is to present a series of interconnected contextual learning strategies applied in the early stages of architecture education. The study presents the design and implementation process of a term project assigned to first-year architecture students. It applied the contextual learning strategies by combining the autobiographical memory and design problem to explore unique narrative structure. This method allows for aligning multiple contexts-course content, the objective of the co… Show more

“…Teachers must be good at designing learning environments that can be easily related to real life. In this type of environment, students can find a connection between ideas that are not realistic in real-world contexts (Sahin, 2019). In addition, according to Nurmiyati (2009), utilizing relevant research results to the subject matter can make learning more active.…”

“…The contextual learning theory places an emphasis on how interaction and successful involvement in the learning process tie information to the learning context and help students understand what knowledge really means [14]. Learning environments that are contextually tailored have the potential to enhance students' understanding and cultivate strong teacher-student relationships [15]. According to the self-determination theory (SDT), motivation must be the driving force behind learning.…”

“…The contextual learning theory emphasizes that knowledge is related to the learning context through interaction and effective participation in the learning process, and the true meaning of knowledge is understood (Lave & Wenger, 1991). Creating a contextual learning environment can affect students’ understanding and form a strong interaction between teachers and students (Sahin, 2019). Self-determination theory (SDT) posits that learning needs to be driven by motivation (Deci & Ryan, 2000).…”
