Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of preheating of inlay and onlay restorations prepared from composite materials and using a CAD/CAM device on microtensile bond strength in different structures. Methodology: 90 impacted human third molar teeth were used. These teeth were divided into 3 groups. MOD inlay cavity preparation was performed. For the first group, restorations were prepared using a CAD/CAM device. For the second group, a fiber-reinforced composite (EverX Posterior, GC, Tokyo, Japan) was used and restoration was then completed using the laboratory composite system (Gradia, GC, Tokyo, Japan). For the third group, laboratory composite system (Gradia, GC, Tokyo, Japan) was used alone. Er,Cr:YSGG laser (Fotona Laser AT Fidelis Plus III, Slovenia) was administered on all prepared restorations. In the cementation of the restorations, resin cement was administered with and without preheating. The prepared samples were tested for microtensile bond strength (Microtensile Tester, Bisco, Schaumburg, IL, USA). Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the groups of the microtensile bond strengths of the samples in which the adhesive cement was pre-heated (P) and not pre-heated (N) (p>0.05). There was a statistically significant difference (p<0.05) in terms of the microtensile bond strength values between the groups in which the adhesive cement was pre-heated during the cementation of restorations. Conclusions: It was observed that exposure of the adhesive cement to preheating in the cementation of the EverX Posterior-based inlays adversely affects the bond strength. The preheating process statistically significantly increased the bond strength in the inlays made using the Gradia composite. Preheating of the cement in the cementation of Cerasmart composite inlays produced using the CAD/CAM system did not affect the microtensile bond strength. Introduction This study was planned to find the solubility of the conventional luting cements in comparison with that of the polyacid-modified composite luting cement and recently introduced resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) with exposure to water at early stages of mixing. Materials and methods An in vitro study of the solubility of the following five commercially available luting cements, viz., glass ionomer cement (GIC) (Fuji I, GC), zinc phosphate (Elite 100, GC), polyacid-modified resin cement (PMCR) (Principle, Dentsply), polycarboxylate cement (PC) (Poly - F, Dentsply), RMGIC (Vitremer, 3M), was conducted. For each of these groups of cements, three resin holders were prepared containing two circular cavities of 5 mm diameter and 2 mm depth. All the cements to be studied were mixed in 30 seconds and then placed in the prepared cavities in the resin cement holder for 30 seconds. Results From all of the observed luting cements, PMCR cement had shown the lowest mean loss of substance at all immersion times and RMGIC showed the highest mean loss of substance at all immersion times in water from 2 to 8 minutes. The solubility of cements decreased by 38% for GIC, 33% for ZnPO4, 50% for PMCR, 29% for PC, and 17% for RMGIC. Conclusion The PMCR cement (Principle-Dentsply) had shown lowest solubility to water at the given time intervals of immersion. Glass ionomer cement is a widely used luting agent for indirect restorations but presents inferior mechanical properties compared to resin cement due to its low elastic modulus. This study evaluated the mechanical and adhesion properties of glass ionomer luting cements reinforced with nano-sized hydroxyapatite particles (HA). The nano-sized HA particles were synthesized using the co-precipitation technique and the resulting precipitate was characterized using X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), field emission scanning electron (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). HA particles were incorporated into the glass powder (FUJI I, GC) and the luting agent was manipulated in a liquid to powder ratio of 3:1 into 6% by weight after determining the best ratio. The flexural strength of the luting agent and shear bond strength of dentin were analyzed and compared to other luting agents namely, (a) glass ionomer (FUJI I), (b) resin-modified glass ionomer (RelyX Luting Plus) and (c) adhesive resin cement (RelyX U200). Failure types after debonding from dentin were evaluated under SEM. Flexural strength and bond strength data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's tests (alpha = 0.001). Addition of 6 w % HA particles in the range of 80-150 nm enhanced the flexural strength (30.97 ± 5.9 versus 11.65 ± 5.63) and shear bond strength (0.97 ± 0.41 versus 0.39 ± 0.16) of a conventional glass ionomer luting agent significantly compared to the non-reinforced ones when manipulated at a liquid to powder ratio of 3:1 (P < 0.001). While conventional glass ionomer, HA-reinforced glass ionomer and resin-modified glass ionomer specimens showed exclusively mixed type of failures, adhesive resin cement showed cohesive failures within the resin cement. Increased mechanical and adhesion potential of the experimental glass ionomer luting agent after incorporation of HA particles could expand the scope of application of this cement.
