Contamination status of Pb and Cd and health risk assessment on vegetables in a mining area in southern Hunan

Abstract: Vegetables, including leafy vegetables and fruit, are of importance to human health. In order to evaluate the heavy metal contamination status and associated health risks of vegetables, 57 vegetables (34 spring vegetables and 23 winter vegetables) and 34 corresponding soil samples (sampled with the spring vegetables) were collected from farmland surrounding a mining area in southern Hunan, China. Analysis was carried out to determine the correlation between the heavy metal content of vegetables and soils, to e… Show more

“…Scholars have done a lot of research on the potential risks of heavy metals to human health. However, this research concentrated mostly on mining areas [8,9], sewage irrigation [10,11] and waste treatment plants [12,13], with the research subjects focusing on dust reduction [14,15], corn [16,17] , vegetables [18,19], drinking water [20,21], rice [22,23], etc. These studies have carried out in-depth research on the accumulation characteristics, physicochemical properties, occurrence forms and physiological and biochemical effects of contamination by heavy metals, laying a foundation for further research on accumulation of heavy metals in crops and their impact on human health.…”
