Contamination of groundwater by arsenic: a review of occurrence, causes, impacts, remedies and membrane-based purification

Abstract: The contamination of groundwater by leached out arsenic has assumed an alarming proportion in several countries. Continued and prolonged ingestion even at a very low level can lead to serious arsenic-related diseases. Strong epidemiological evidence of arsenic carcinogenicity has forced the World Health Organization (WHO) to lower the maximum permissible contaminant limit (MCL) in drinking water to 10 ppb from earlier limit of 50 ppb. This has thrown a big challenge to the scientific community to devise effici… Show more

“…are highly sought after as bioremediators of arsenic-polluted waters ( Zawadzka et al, 2007 ; Mondal et al, 2008 ). Arsenic-contaminated drinking water is a worldwide problem affecting the health of millions of people, especially in under-developed countries ( Mandal and Suzuki, 2002 ; Belluck et al, 2003 ; Han et al, 2003 ; Sun et al, 2006 ; Brinkel et al, 2009 ; Pal et al, 2009 ). Contamination of seafood is another major threat ( Ahmed et al, 1993 ; Neff, 1997 ; Mason et al, 2000 ; Kirby and Maher, 2002 ; Rahman et al, 2012 ).…”
