Contamination-free non-contact wettability assessment system

Abstract: Surface wettability is one of most important indexes for understanding the interfacial characteristics between a solid surface and a liquid, especially such physico-chemical properties as hydrophilicity and water repellency. Recently, non-contact wettability assessment by monitoring the behavior of liquid covering a sample surface by jet-flow application to the liquid has been proposed. This method is applicable to the in-liquid assessment of high wettability materials for which it is difficult to measure the … Show more

“…The main characteristic of contamination formation lies on the physico-chemical type of link created between contamination and machine parts that enable the adherence on them after a complex wetting process. 11,15 They put together interfacial superficial strength of both elements to form cohesive continuity. 16 The physical adsorption that enable adhesion when the dirt wet and dry on the machine part, can be establish by the Van Der Waal intermolecular 16,17 and other forces (dispersion forces, induction forces, hydrogenous links, dipoles -dipoles links) acting on lower distance close to 0.5 nm.…”

“…Thus, easy complementary methods are desired to investigate the hydration process as well as the surface properties in water. Tanaka et al recently established the air-injection-mediated liquid exclusion (AILE) method as a new wettability assessment system. In this system, an air jet was blown on a surface immersed in liquid media, and the liquid exclusion diameter was measured. A larger liquid exclusion diameter was observed at a more water-repelling surface (Figure ).…”

“…A larger liquid exclusion diameter was observed at a more water-repelling surface (Figure ). The previous research has reported that the size of the liquid exclusion diameter correlated to the contact angle . Also, the wettability of the cell culture surface and biofilm made from microorganisms was examined by the AILE method to evaluate the biological conditions. , Thus, this method is suitable for the assessment of the change in time-dependent wettability of soft interfaces.…”
