Contact Lens Corneal Inflammatory Events in a University Population

Abstract: The multivariate analysis suggests that younger age and the use of PQ-1/MAPD, particularly in DW, increase the risk of acquiring a CIE with soft contact lens wear in college-aged students. For PHMB users, EW compared with DW increases the risk of a CIE; but for PQ-1/MAPD users, there is no difference between EW and DW.

“… 68 Another study concurred, reporting PQ-1 plus Aldox was associated with more corneal infiltrative events compared to PHMB with daily wear CLs in a university population. 69 Comparing the overall efficacy of PHMB versus PQ-1 MPS, the studies above generally indicate that PHMB and PQ-1 plus Aldox (or in a few cases PQ-1 plus alexidine) are equally effective against bacteria and equally ineffective against fungi; however, PQ-1 plus Aldox is superior to PHMB MPS in efficacy against Acanthamoeba .…”

“…240 Bioburden and specific lens care products or modalities may play a role in the development of CIEs, yet there appears to be no advantage to the use of antibiotics to reduce the incidence of CIEs during extended wear of silicone hydrogel lenses. [241][242][243][244][245] The exact relationship between CIEs and microbial keratitis remains unclear.…”
