Contact-Based Method to Evaluate Mixing in Multicomponent Experiments and Simulations

Abstract: A contact-based method to evaluate mixing in a multicomponent system is proposed in this work. The proposed method is based on spatial contact frequency. One component contacting another component more frequently in space yields a higher mixing index. The preliminary applications of this method in a quasi-2D binary experiment and a 3D ternary simulation are presented. Detailed mixing information is presented. Comparisons with other methods are made, and the advantages of this method can be summarized by the fo… Show more

“…The extent of mixing within the bed according to the tracer in the solids phase was quantified using the intensity of segregation, IS 47–49 : IS=σxSNitalictracerNitalictotal()1goodbreak−NitalictracerNitalictotal where σxS is the standard deviation of the mass fraction of tracer particles present in all CFD cells and Nitalictracer and Nitalictotal are the total number of tracer particles and all particles present in the system, respectively. The method to calculate Nitalictracer and Nitalictotal follows the same way as to calculate Np detailed earlier.…”
