ABSTRACT:The goal of the study was to examine the relationship between drug use and abuse and maltreatment during childhood among university students in San Salvador, El Salvador. This research was an exploratory study, with a cross-sectional design using a sample of 272 students. The results indicated that 43% (118) of students reported having used drugs sometime in their life; the most frequently used drugs in the past 12 months were alcohol, cannabis and tobacco, with prevalence of 14% (38), 9.3% (26) and 7% (19) respectively. Physical and verbal abuses were the two most common types of maltreatment, and sexual abuse was less frequent, but still present. Having friends who use drugs was a risk factor for drug use and abuse. Additionally there was a direct significant (<0.005) relationship between the use and abuse of drugs and physical abuse during childhood. DESCRIPTORS:Child Abuse. Substance-related disorders. Trata-se de estudo exploratório, de corte transversal, com uma amostra de 272 estudantes. Os resultados indicaram que 43% (118) dos alunos relataram ter consumido drogas em algum momento da vida; as drogas mais utilizadas nos últimos 12 meses foram álcool (14%), maconha (9,3%) e tabaco (7%). Os abusos físico e verbal foram os tipos mais comuns de abuso e, menos frequente, porém existente, foi o abuso sexual. Ter amigos que usam drogas foi um fator de risco para o uso e abuso de drogas. Illicit drug use is related to individual characteristics; however, social and family environments seem to be associated with this consumption. The aim of this study was to analyze the association of the relationships between parents or guardians and Brazilian adolescents that use illicit drugs. This is a cross-sectional study with data from the Brazilian National Survey of School Health (PeNSE, 2015), in which the target population was school children from the ninth grade (eighth year). A total of 102,072 students were included in the current research, being 52,782 females and 49,290 males. Illicit drug use was the outcome and family relationship factors were the exposure. For adjustments, factors as sociodemographic characteristics, mental health, as well as tobacco and alcohol use were established. Univariate and multivariate analysis stratified by sex was conducted through Poisson regression, with a robust variance estimator to calculate the prevalence ratio and the 95% confidence interval. The general prevalence of illicit drug use was 3.8%; 3.3% among females and 4.4% among males. The following factors increase the prevalence ratio for illicit drug use in adolescents: not living with their parents, not feeling supervised by parents, and skipping classes without parents’ consent. Never feeling understood by parents and frequent physical aggressions by family members were also associated with illicit drug use. Family relationships collaborate to illicit drug use among Brazilian adolescents, considering their sociodemographic factors, alcohol and smoking habits and parents and friends’ profiles.

Objetivo. Determinar si la sintomatología de ansiedad, y depresión se asocia a las variables de género, edad, y nivel de riesgo asociado al consumo de alcohol y tabaco. Metodología. Se realizó una investigación de diseño transversal con muestreo no probabilístico de tipo no experimental, conformado por una muestra de 663 adolescentes entre los 13 y 20 años, que corresponden a estudiantes de enseñanza básica superior y bachillerato. Se aplicó tres instrumentos psicométricos: Inventario de Depresión de Beck II, Escala de Ansiedad de Hamilton y La Prueba de Detección de Consumo de Alcohol, Tabaco y Sustancias (ASSIST v3.1). Resultados. Se identificó una asociación estadística entre el riesgo asociado al consumo de alcohol y tabaco con sintomatología de ansiedad y depresión. Se demostró la relación entre el alto riesgo de consumo de estas sustancias con niveles altos de sintomatología de ansiedad y depresión. Igualmente, existe relación entre sintomatología de ansiedad y depresión con el género; y con la edad. Conclusiones. Los adolescentes que presentan riesgo asociado al consumo de alcohol y tabaco presentan una relación significativa con sintomatología de ansiedad y de depresión. Existe mayor tendencia de las mujeres en presentar sintomatología de depresión y de ansiedad que en hombres
