Consumer-assisted selection: the preference for new tablegrape cultivars in China

Abstract: Background and Aims:Many new grape breeding lines with diverse quality attributes are becoming available every year. The search for specific markets is both time-consuming and labour-intensive. Consumer-assisted selection could help improve breeding and marketing efficiency. Methods and Results: Three hundred and fifteen Chinese consumers were surveyed in Beijing; 69 of them further taste-tested ten grape samples to understand consumer preferences for tablegrape cultivars and the key attributes influencing the… Show more

“…As a result, the variables SH_I_L (representing PC-1), BE_E (PC-2), Be_Wi (PC-3), BE_100SW (PC-4) and JU_TA (PC-5) were finally selected. These variables not only represent different and independent variance segments, but also highly appreciated traits for table grape consumers and growers, including berry size, shape and seediness (BE_100SW, BE_E and Be_Wi), grape composition (JU_TA) and plant vigor (SH_I_L) (Dragincic et al 2015;Wang et al 2017;Zhou et al 2015). In fact, these are key parameters usually considered in table grape breeding programs for the development of new premium varieties (Wei et al 2002).…”

“…Fruit texture and fruit skin strength are important attributes in fruit production and transport, as they largely determine the methods used for fruit harvest, postharvest sorting, packaging, and transportation. Fruit texture and skin strength are also important in consumers’ assessment of fruit quality and preferences [4, 42]. Fig texture and skin strength are remarkably more resistant in CR vs. TR fruit to harvesting, transport and shelf handling.…”

“…A questionnaire survey (Zhou et al, 2015) reported that by Chinese consumers over 'price', which indicated that ber-All rootstocks in this paper, especially '110R', reduced berry size. Similarly, Wang et al (2019) evaluated the effects of rootstocks on 'Cabernet Sauvignon' performance, and berry weight was minimal on '110R'.…”
