Construction and validation of a scale of assessment of self‐care behaviors with arteriovenous fistula in hemodialysis

Abstract: Several guidelines recommend the importance of educating the patient about the care of vascular access. Nurses have a key role in promoting the development of self-care behaviors by providing the necessary knowledge to patients, so that they develop the necessary skills to take care of the arteriovenous fistula (AVF). This article describes the process of building a scale of assessment of self-care behaviors with arteriovenous fistula in hemodialysis (ASBHD-AVF). This is a cross-sectional study in which the de… Show more

“…Futhermore, some patients showed a frequency of self‐care behaviors a little above 25% only and none of the patients performed all self‐care behaviors. Patients in our sample exhibited less self‐care behaviors with AVF when compared with the scale validation study, where the frequency of such behaviors was 82.4% (minimum of 21.9%; maximum of 100%) . In another study with 30 ESRD patients on HD, 97.7% had inadequate self‐care behaviors with AVF .…”

“…Information concerning demographic characteristics (age, gender, education, employment, marital status) and clinical characteristics (ESRD etiology, dialysis vintage, previous AVFs, AVF duration, information about care with the AVF) was collected from a questionnaire designed by the authors. Information concerning self‐care behaviors with the AVF was collected from the Scale of Assessment of Self‐Care Behaviours with Arteriovenous Fistula in Hemodialysis (ASBHD‐AVF) . This scale has 16 items in two sub‐scales: prevention of complications (10 items) and management of signs and symptoms (6 items) .…”

“…The Chinese version of ASBHD-AVF was translated and adapted from the Portuguese version of Scale of Assessment of Self-Care Behaviors with Arteriovenous Fistula in Hemodialysis (ASBHD-AVF) (7). The original ASBHD-AVF included 16 items in two subscales: management of signs and symptoms (six items), and prevention of complications (10 items) using a 5-point Likert scale (one represented never, and five represented always).…”

“…However, after a systematic literature review, it was verified that little was known on the state of AVF self-care behavior, especially in China. The scale of assessment of self-care behaviors with arteriovenous fistula in hemodialysis (ASBHD-AVF) was designed and validated in Portugal to measure the self-care behavior in hemodialysis patients with arteriovenous fistula (7). Thus, the aim of this study was to translate the ASBHD-AVF into Chinese, test the reliability and validity of the Chinese ASBHD-AVF, and to assess the self-care behavior of Chinese patients undergoing hemodialysis with AVF.…”
